Markku has worked with the huskies for 18 years, Mari 11 years. During wintertime we employ one extra person.
We have 2 children Mikko and Miia. They have been taking part in the dog care from an early age.
In the beginning of the 90's Markku first had Siberian huskies, some Greenland dogs and Alaskan Malamutes. At first the programme consisted of 'pulkka' tours (this is a small sled for luggage which is pulled by a dog and the sled is followed by a skier) but was soon changed to normal dog sledding tours. Now our dogs are all alaskan huskies.
We have found it difficult to find time and resources to compete in sleddog racing or perhaps it is the motivation that is missing. Markku participated in the European Championship Race in Nurmes in 2003. He finished as 10th out of 17 teams that were on the trail. Recently Markku has been thinking about taking part in a long distance race again.
Instead of racing it has become a tradition for Markku to make a longer safari at the end of season. At the longest he has driven his dogs to Abisko in Sweden, 450 km.
